BLUEBERRY HILL
Washington County, MD

When Michael James was nine years old his father handed him his dull pick axe and told him to finish the row. He said it was the only way he knew to offset civil strife, live honestly, and sleep well. Michael had plenty of time to figure out his father's riddles while digging holes for the new blueberries they where planting. His father had been drafted in 1969, and during the war he witnessed dioxins being sprayed to defoliate the triple-canopied jungles. The devastation deeply influenced his agrarian philosophy. In 1978 he began to cultivate this mountain land.

When national organic standards became law, Blueberry Hill Farm had already met the requirements. In addition to blueberries they now grow cut flowers, vegetables, and small fruits. Their focus is to bring pure food to market that has been grown in fertile soil. You can find them at Foggy Bottom, H Street and By the White House.
