HASKINS FAMILY FARM
Middletown, VA
Robert and Mary Haskins started Haskins Family Farm in 2007 after buying a 14-acre farm in Middletown, VA. Operating a farm has been a lifelong dream of Bob and Mary's. While their focus is on chicken, they also raise turkeys and hogs along with chickens for eggs. All meat products are USDA-inspected, enabling marketing of their products everywhere in the US. Chickens and turkeys are raised on pasture during the warmer months, while the hogs and egg layers are on pasture year-round. Production (including chicken, pork and eggs) continues year-round due to the farm's year-round Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and participation in year-round farmers' markets.
The Haskins strive to treat their animals humanely and with the respect the animals deserve. While not certified organic, the farm uses organic and sustainable production methods, with many methods originating from the 'golden age of farming' (the 1920s-1950s). Subtherapeutic drugs (drugs in feed) and hormones are never used, and antibiotics are only used when absolutely necessary to treat a specific sickness. The goal of the farm is to provide food while enriching the land and the environment, in order to preserve the land for future generations.
Haskins Family Farm sells its chicken, pork, turkey and eggs at the
Foggy Bottom, Crystal City and Berkeley Springs (WV) seasonal farmers markets, and at the year-round Leesburg farmers
market in northern VA. To find out more, visit them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.
